What is a Triathlon?
A triathlon consists of 3 events which all occur during the same race. The "traditional" mix of sports are swimming, bicycling and running. The cumulative time includes the transition between the swim/bike and bike/run.
The swim can be done in a pool, a lake or in the ocean. The swim can be started from the beach, on a floating pontoon or in the water. The best way to describe the race start is insanity. All that can be seen by the spectators are arms & legs flying all around bodies bumping into each other & the water getting all chopped up. That picture looks crazy doesn't it? Well don't worry, it's always intimidating the first time out, but you'll find your way.
The first transition is the most difficult of the two. You first have to get your body oriented from being horizontal to vertical (you can feel a little dizzy). Then you have to run from the water while starting to take off your wetsuit (if you're wearing one). Once you get to your bike rack & their wetsuit is off, the bike clothes go on (if they weren't under your wetsuit) & you run the bike out of transition. You MUST have your helmet on & buckled. Race volunteers will tell you when you can get on your bike.
The bike ride is a non drafting race which means that you must stay 3 to 4 bike lengths behind the bike in front of you unless you are passing. This rule is enforced by referees on motorcycles who can assess a time penalty or disqualify you. There may be water stations on the bike depending on the distance.
When you come back for the second transition, race volunteers will tell you where to dismount your bike. You run the bike to your rack space, you can take off your helmet & change into your running shoes.
Then you're off on your run. There may be water stations on the run depending on the distance. For the shorter distances, this may be right as you exit the transition.
You then head to the finish line & celebrate your triathlon finish. There is lots of food and drink available for all of the athletes as well as award ceremonies and you get to proudly wear your race t-shirt for all to see!
